…as NOT in Generating a Character.
I am currently looking at making character generation a bit simpler to understand. As part of this a suggestion was made by a community member to remove the character generation sections and making them separate “Appendixes” that can be issued on request. However, I feel that completely removing all character generation sections leaves the Core Rules feeling incomplete and wouldn’t give a potential player any feel for how the system would work.
However, separating out some of the more complex and specific rules IS a very valid idea I feel.
So, what I’m proposing is a restructuring of the Character Creation rules. Characters adhere to a “Generation” Tier system. A Gen.1 character is a basic starting character whilst a Gen.2 character has access to Elite rules sets.
For example: An Imperial Guardsman would be classed as a Gen.1 character and any player could play and create one. However, a Commissar would be a Gen.2 player and only playable by a new rule to be included “Grouping”.
Grouping: For each “group” of 4 Gen.1 characters booked for an event, the 5th character has allocated a Gen.2 slot. So for each group of four IG “grunts” there can be one Commissar. To facilitate this the booking system is mildly re-vamp’d. No longer do you have to book AND submit a character at the same time, the booking and fee for events will be separate from your character submission, which you will do after you have received your booking confirmation. Booking confirmations will now included character generation details and forums.
Gen.1 to Gen.2 progression: Characters will still be able to progress naturally from Gen.1 to Gen.2 via use of LSA points. This will be formally written into the Core Rules with the points cost associated with this character move.
This method means I can move Character Creation sets for ALL Elite class characters to separate Appendixes, which will then be issued to the appropriate players only. This leaves the Core Rules with only the basic (Gen.1) character creation rules which should simplify things for players.
I would like your feedback on this proposal before I sit down and work on it though. Good idea? Did you find the character creation rules confusing before? Any other things I can do to make the rules system easier to get into for new players?
