Hi guys, I'm looking for a LARP system that involves large units in pitched battles as well as smaller scale skirmishes. Something where regiments of pretty ordinary characters are led by heroes and commanded by mighty lords. Also I'm recruiting for my unit of mercenaries if anyone is interested. We're going to be styled after the Landsknects with Halbardiers, Spearmen, Crossbowmen and Swordsmen as primaries with militia Free Companies and Archers for skirmishers, lastly one body guard unit of Life Guards as a heavy line breaker unit armed with great swords. (Can anyone tell where I ripped this off from? )

Well I was thinking the unit size would be a minimum of 10 and being mercenaries we'd fight for whatever faction was willing to hire us, that should make for some interesting RP opportunities. Saying that's a lot of people is try but I think it would be fairly easy to kit out everyone who joined with everything they need to act as any one of the units described.

The Lorien Trust system has this ability but not really enough "professionally" organised units of significant size, there is scope for it and they put on very large scale engagements. However, they tend to degenerate into large scale skirmishes as co-ordination and unit cohesion breaks down rapidly (not in my unit but...)
Have you tried the SCA? Not LRP but very organised and brutal!

AS such a well drilled field unit would quickly route any opposition, sounds fun and I amy have to have a look at this. By the way i've got 7 years dark age and 2 years early medievil re-enactment experience and some of the scraps there had over a thousand loonies on the field at once (1996 battle of Hastings we had 1000 a side with Cavalry (only around 50 but still impressive) and the arrow storms realy put things in perspective)

John: Yeah that was my thought, tight ranks of well disceplined soldiers sweeping all enemies aside. I'm interested in the Dark age/early mediveal period, in fact I intend on making a film based on the battle of Hastings and the events leading up to it.. Are you a member of Regia Anglorum?
Manius: I have looked into the SCA and am considering it but I like the magical element you get with LARP.
If you're interested just think of Warhammer fantasy state troops in Black and Yellow colours then you'll pretty much have the look.

Well, the main issue groups such as mine in the Lorien Trust system have is getting enough members with the correct equipment.
Shield walls win out (obviously) but getting the numbers behind those shields is very hard. We've been reduced from a 40+ sheild unit down to about 15 now so we don't have the "game winning" impact we did have.
Our biggest claim to fame was winning a battle where we were outnumbered about 3:1 (about 1500 vs 4000 to be mroe precise) and our 40 man unit just smashed and run down any enemy formation, line or anything else it touched.
We just walked the whole time and anything we walked into just disintergrated! We weren't all that special either, we had some spell protection but nothing offensive. Just a tight formation and the swords to put it into action.
Still, we managed to hold our encampment gate for half an hour against 200+ last year!

I was NFPS for the dark age and Gun Company for the medievel, I was also the weapons trainer for the group I was with (on the basis that I regularly kicked there asses). I know some people in Regia and we have come to an understanding, they don't mention Kim Sidhorn (king of England) and I don't take the p*** The majority of the people in Regia are ok its just Kim Sidhorn is a spawny eyed parrot faced wazzock (spelling?) and is about as popular with other re-enactment societies as someone with Impetigo. Deffo interested though

One of our commanders (in my LT group) is heavily into SCA so if anyone wants a contact...let me know.
Likewise, if anyone wants to join the LT group, let me know as well.

I've been thinking about doing LT but I understand you're up the other end of the country from me. Would the 16th century style I'm looking at doing fit in with the LT world?

The main four LT events are held in Derby so fairly central. Other sanctioned (smaller) events are all over. 16th Centrury style would fit but its firmly fantasy, no fire-arms anymore (mate had one of the last sanctioned ones). Lt would be good for a Buccaneer character though, or Cavalier style.
For something more puritan or later 16th / early 17th century, Maelstrom would be more suitable as its based more along the lines of the colonisation of the Americas (in form/style).
LT - for example, my group are Drow in the main.
