First two books are very readable, the third went a little into the realms of "what a pile of sh1t" for me.
The first story is along the lines of planetary government is sort of taken over by Dark Eldar (but not really) and what may be the genesis of the Necrons, cue big shooty bits and nasty warp beasts (and traitor vivisected on alternate wednesdays) with final battle in a mine, overall very well written and very readable story, however considering the big beasty at the end is a death god of some sort how the feth did an ordinary Space Marine survive?
Second book is about a splinter of a Hive fleet on collision course with the sister planet to the Ultramarines home so they send a couple of squads and a ship to support (calling in on the Mortificators for help on the way) cue antagonism over the differance in the Mortificators compared to the Ultramarines considering they come from the same "stock" ends with the main characters being accused of not following the Astartes "handbook of how to knock the snot outa the bad guys" and get sent out at the beginning of the third book as Ultra marines no more. Cue big Demon folding the ship they are on into the Warp and eating all the crew EXCEPT our heroic pair. Big demon makes a deal with the pair and drops them on a world in the Eye of Terror where they meet up with other disgraced marines and assault the big fortress of the Iron Men chaos space marines (who are at war with differant factions of Iron men marines) they get captured and taken to exactly where they need to go, cue our indomitable hero getting sealed inside a beastie that breeds new chaos marines. he gets out (not before his genetic material is taken and used) frees the remains of his men and releases another Demon (the one the first Demon wanted to meet) first demon turns up and cue big fight that leaves our hero's completely untouched. as a side note our hero was stripped of his armour and it miraculously re-appears..... (I hate that kind of stuff in books) Second demon kills first Demon and lies down for a nap (In my book this is time to "stick the boot in" and kill it but no they stand round like a bunch of lemons waiting for the bad guy to wake it up with the offer of a lite snack (the attacking army) our intrepid heroes cadge a lift on a demonic train (how the feth are they going to tell it when to stop?)
my advice is read the first 2 but don't bother with the third.
