Simple question really. “24hrs or designated times?”
Now, obviously 24hr time-in is much more realistic and gives for a more tense LRP event, however, I’m not a big fan for three main reasons.
1) An LRP event is meant to be “fun” and many players just don’t like the constant pressure that a 24hr event presents them.
2) There’s always at least two members of crew who end up keeping things ticking over for the entirety of the event with the absolute minimum of sleep and usually very little food. Obviously, not big fun for them.
3) Plot – whilst 24hr time-in is “in theory” more tense, often its near impossible to keep a coherent plot running for that long (including resetting of props etc) and, in my experience, plot teams often resort to just adding in random “monster” encounters during the wee-small hours to cover the gaps.
So, as we’re now realistically looking at holding an event in the next 5-6 months I’d like everyone’s considered opinions on the subject.

i think we should mix it depending on the situation and story. i think everyone will enjoy the 24hr game if there is a really good story too it and decent action (with obvious rule changes for sleeping and it being dark.)
i know i would love it

24hr time in works if the marshalls have enough support (and it isn't just 1 or 2 people doing all the work) however time out areas are a god send on long games.
As for night games try using a tracer unit, very atmospheric and looks like laser fire as well.

Ok. I’d already started to over think my responses and give lots of theoretical options but I deleted at least two versions of what I was typing.
Too much detail, too soon…don’t want to give anything away do I…
Answering the questions more directly then…
For a short event – say a 24hr event – then we won’t have a “Time-Out” time but designated safe-zones (sleeping area, food area, toilets). I mean these to remain safe-zones during all events due to real-life H&S issues anyway but it bears pointing out.
IF we went with a time-in/time-out sequence then it would be along the lines established by many LRP fest events – from 10:00hrs-02:00hrs.
I may even consider stretching this to 09:00hrs-02:00hrs if sufficient crew support is there.
As John mentioned the key to extending time-in is sufficient crew to cover the time. This we’ll have to see nearer the time, I’ve had plenty of offers for crewing BUT several of those could well be PLAYERS first and foremost and the last thing I want to do is be forced to take Players out of the system just to cover crewing posts.
Tracer Units – in night games are absolutely AWESOME! And you will be allowed to use them if you have them. I’ll leave my comments on that at that.
Still, even with my proposed time-in/time-out schedule there will be a good chunk of play during the night.

The other airsoft larp I do is game in from the Friday night to the sunday afternoon (with the part of Sat (2am onwards) night for chilling out) all players are players and crew, tracer units are required on AEG's at night. I don't have a problem crewing events as the roleplaying of NPC's can be more interesting (and certainly much more nasty ) and more fun.

And Id go with 24 hour game in, but with designated ceasfire times, so even though we are still "In Charicter" you can take your glasses/ face mask off.

For the Lasgun, you can use the M16 tracer magazines instead ( I think G&P make them). Basically it's a standard 30 round mag with a battery powered light source inside that charges up the bb. Bought one a while back, but haven't had a chance to test it yet.

If memory serves they are around 25 - 30 a pop and hold 120 rnds, the mod for the standard las guns is a plastic tube fitted over the normal flash hider, if so remove tube unscrew flash hider and screw on tracer unit.
